Pop Culture of Satan

I’m familiar with the Faustian bargain and prodigy artists’ dealings with the devil, particularly as it pertains to Robert Johnson, who has always been a subject of fascination for me. Robert’s pact with old Lucifer definitely adds to his mystique, as well as that of the Delta Blues.

Several blues musicians from Robert’s era were said to have struck deals with Satan for a flash of fortune or fame, and usually had little more than a microscopic moment of either. The legend of hocking one’s soul to attain notoriety or prestige has certainly persevered over time, branching out to other genres like Rock, Rap, and even Hip Hop.

The dawning of the 80s was rife with the “Satanic Panic”, it wasn’t about so much about bargaining with the “evil one” as it was paying allegiance to his bad self. The onset of Grunge music and eventually the emergence of the 21st century ushered in an immediate decline of the devil in music, until very recently.

As of 2020, mainstream music or more appropriately, “lame” stream music has seen a seismic reemergence of devil worship and Faustian deals. Six hundred and sixty-six has regained its mojo, Satan’s sycophants are back, loud and proud.
